Bees & Wasps
Apidae / Vespidae
Honeybee swarms get relocated alive where possible. Wasps in window AC units, balcony eaves and palm trees get safely removed. Always call — never spray a hive yourself.
Bees vs wasps — they need different treatment
UAE bee and wasp calls fall into three categories:
- Honeybee swarm (cluster on a tree branch, balcony rail, AC unit) — usually a temporary stop on the way to a new hive site. We relocate alive wherever possible, working with local beekeepers.
- Established honeybee hive (inside wall void, AC duct, under villa eaves) — needs experienced removal. Killing the hive in place leaves comb and honey, which leaks, attracts pests and damages drywall. We extract the comb after removing bees.
- Paper wasps / yellow jackets / hornets — defensive, will sting unprovoked. Safely treated with targeted dust application at dusk (cooler, calmer wasps) and physical nest removal once activity stops.
Why DIY is dangerous
UAE bees are increasingly Africanized hybrids — defensive and quick to swarm. A spray-can attack on a hive triggers mass stinging defence; we've seen serious medical incidents. Anaphylaxis from multiple stings is a genuine risk.
If you see a hive or swarm: stay 5+ metres away, keep pets and children indoors, close windows on that side, and call us. We typically arrive within 2-4 hours for active stinging incidents.
How to identify
- Honeybee: 12-15mm, golden-brown with black bands, fuzzy
- Paper wasp: 15-20mm, slim, yellow and black, paper-like nest
- Hornet: 25-35mm, larger, more aggressive
- Swarm: dense cluster of 5,000-30,000 bees, baseball- to football-sized
Signs of infestation
- Visible swarm cluster (temporary, often moves within 24-72 hours)
- Bee or wasp traffic in/out of a wall void, AC unit, eave
- Paper-like grey nest under eaves or on balconies
- Buzzing sound from inside walls or ceiling voids
Where they hide
- Window AC unit cavities
- Wall voids and ceiling gaps near eaves
- Palm tree fronds and bases
- Balcony railings (temporary swarms)
- Garden sheds and unused outdoor structures
Health risks
- Sting allergic reactions (mild to anaphylaxis)
- Multiple-sting incidents with defensive Africanized colonies
- Inhaled hive debris is an asthma trigger
- Risk to pets (face/throat stings)
Prevention tips
- Inspect window AC units before turning on for the season
- Seal eave gaps and roof penetrations
- Remove paper wasp nest starts early in spring (small + few wasps)
- Don't leave sweet drinks or fruit uncovered outdoors
Our treatment methods
- Live swarm relocation (honeybees)
- Hive extraction with comb removal
- Targeted dust application (wasps)
- Physical nest removal post-treatment
Lifecycle in UAE conditions
- 1Honeybee colonies overwinter year-round in UAE; spring swarming peaks March-June when colonies split.
- 2A swarm cluster (5,000-30,000 bees) is a temporary stop on the way to a new hive site — usually moves within 24-72 hours.
- 3Established colonies build comb in protected voids (wall cavities, AC ducts, eaves) over weeks to months.
- 4Paper wasp queens overwinter alone and start small colonies in spring; nest grows through summer to 50-200 wasps.
- 5Hornet colonies can reach 700+ workers by end of summer — much more aggressive than paper wasps.
Before we arrive
- Stay 5+ metres away from any visible hive or wasp nest — Africanized colonies in UAE are increasingly defensive
- Close windows on the side of the property facing the hive/nest
- Keep pets and children indoors during the visit
- Note when activity is heaviest (morning vs evening) — it informs our intervention timing
- Don't attempt DIY removal — multiple-sting incidents are a real medical risk
After treatment
- Stay 3+ metres from the treated area for 24 hours — residual bees may return to the entry point
- Inspect surrounding eaves and AC units monthly during peak season for new nest starts
- Keep windows closed on that side of the property until we confirm the all-clear
- Schedule comb removal — leaving honeycomb in walls causes leaking, attracts other pests and damages drywall
- Re-screen any open vents or eave gaps to prevent re-colonisation
When DIY isn't enough
Always. Africanized hybrid honeybees in the UAE are defensive and quick to mass-attack. A spray-can attack on a hive triggers aggressive swarming defence; we've seen serious medical incidents from DIY attempts. Professional removal handles bees with appropriate timing (dusk for wasps, gentle relocation for honeybees), full PPE, and post-removal comb extraction to prevent secondary problems.
UAE regulatory context
Honeybees are protected as pollinators in the UAE — we relocate alive wherever possible, partnering with local beekeepers. Killing honeybees is reserved for inaccessible structural-void infestations with no live-extraction option. Wasps and hornets have no protected status; standard pest control protocols apply.
