Ants
Formicidae
Pharaoh, ghost and carpenter ants in UAE homes trail to kitchen sweets and pet food. Treatment uses gel-bait the workers carry back to the colony — surface spray kills the visible ants but leaves the queen.
UAE ant species
Three species cause most UAE ant calls:
- Pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) — tiny (2mm), light yellow-brown, in apartment kitchens. Most common UAE indoor ant.
- Ghost ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum) — pale, almost translucent body with dark head. Trails to sugar and water.
- Carpenter ant (Camponotus) — large (8-12mm), black or red. Damages soft wood, especially water-damaged areas.
We also see fire ants in landscaping and odorous house ants less commonly.
Why spray makes ant problems worse
Spraying a Pharaoh ant trail kills the visible workers — but the colony reacts by budding: splitting into multiple smaller colonies in different locations. A single-trail kitchen problem becomes a five-trail whole-apartment problem.
The correct treatment is slow-acting gel-bait: workers carry the bait back to the nest and feed it to larvae and the queen. The colony dies in 2-4 weeks without ever seeing a spray bottle.
Carpenter ants are different
Carpenter ants don't eat wood — they tunnel through soft (water-damaged) wood to nest. If you see large black ants in a UAE villa, check for plumbing leaks, AC condensate damage or roof water ingress. Treatment combines gel-bait with dust injection into the nest galleries, plus repairing the moisture source.
How to identify
- Pharaoh: 2mm, light yellow-brown, two-segmented waist
- Ghost: 1.5mm, pale body with dark head and abdomen
- Carpenter: 8-12mm, black or black-and-red, single-segmented waist
- Trail patterns: continuous lines along edges, baseboards, plumbing
Signs of infestation
- Continuous trails along edges and corners
- Ants gathering at pet food, sugar, sweet drinks
- Sawdust piles below carpenter ant galleries
- Tiny piles of nest debris under sinks or near windows
Where they hide
- Kitchen counters, around sinks, in cabinet hinges
- Bathroom edges around plumbing
- Window frames and AC unit penetrations
- Pet food bowls and storage
- Garden landscaping (entry route into villas)
Health risks
- Pharaoh ants can mechanically transmit Salmonella and Staphylococcus
- Fire ant stings cause painful welts and allergic reactions
- Generally low health risk for most species
- Carpenter ants damage water-affected wood
Prevention tips
- Wipe down counters before bed — no sugar residue
- Store pet food in sealed containers, not bags
- Seal cracks where pipes enter walls under sinks
- Don't spray ants you see — let our bait do the work
Our treatment methods
- Sugar-based gel-bait (most species)
- Protein-based bait (alternation strategy)
- Dust injection (carpenter ant galleries)
- Perimeter residual (exterior entry points)
Lifecycle in UAE conditions
- 1Pharaoh ant queens lay 350-400 eggs in their lifetime; colonies have multiple queens (polygynous), making them especially hard to eradicate.
- 2Eggs develop into workers in 38-45 days at UAE indoor temperatures.
- 3When stressed (e.g. by spray), Pharaoh ant colonies bud — splitting into multiple new colonies in different locations.
- 4Carpenter ant colonies have a single queen; workers tunnel through soft wood to nest, with damage compounding over years.
- 5Most UAE ant species reproduce year-round indoors; outdoor activity peaks March-November.
Before we arrive
- Don't spray over-the-counter insecticide on the trail — it kills visible workers but causes Pharaoh ants to bud into multiple colonies
- Note where you're seeing trails (kitchen, bathroom, around plumbing) — that tells us the nest direction
- Clear sticky residue from counters but don't deep-clean the trail — workers need to find the gel-bait
- Move pet food into sealed containers before our visit
- Identify any plumbing leaks under sinks — moisture attracts most ant species
After treatment
- Expect more visible activity for 24-48 hours as workers feed on the gel — don't disturb the bait dots
- Don't wipe down the bait placement areas (cabinet hinges, sink edges) for 14 days
- Don't deploy DIY spray near treated areas — it repels ants from the bait
- Activity should drop sharply after day 3-5 and effectively zero by day 10-14
- Schedule a follow-up if you see continued activity at day 14
When DIY isn't enough
Pharaoh ant DIY almost always backfires. Spray attacks cause the colony to bud — your single-trail problem becomes a five-trail whole-apartment problem within weeks. Carpenter ants need specific dust treatment of nest galleries; over-the-counter products don't reach those voids. For both species, professional gel-bait rotation is the only reliable elimination strategy.
UAE regulatory context
Pharaoh ants are a healthcare-facility priority because of contamination risk in sterile dressings, IV ports and surgical equipment. Hospitals in Dubai (DHA-licensed) and Abu Dhabi (DOH-licensed) maintain ant-specific surveillance programmes; we support facility-grade Pharaoh ant work where required.
