Reptilia
Geckos eat insects and are usually harmless. Larger monitor lizards and snakes need professional removal. We use exclusion-first methods, never harming protected species.
UAE reptiles in residential context
- House gecko (Hemidactylus) — small (10cm), translucent, eats mosquitoes, ants and small cockroaches. Beneficial. We don't treat for them; we exclude entry points if homeowner prefers them outside.
- Yellow-spotted agama / garden lizards — larger, in gardens. Harmless, eat insects.
- Desert monitor (Varanus griseus) — large lizard (up to 1.3m), occasionally enters villas. Protected species; we relocate, not kill.
- Sand snake / Arabian sand boa — non-venomous, occasionally in villa gardens. Relocated alive.
- Saw-scaled viper / horned viper — venomous; rare in residential areas but possible in newer villa communities adjacent to desert. Always call us, never approach.
Our reptile policy
We operate under UAE wildlife protection rules. Native reptiles are relocated alive to suitable habitat; we don't kill native species. Our work is:
- Inspection — locate reptile, identify species
- Safe capture with tools (snake hooks, pillowcase containment for non-venomous; trained handler for venomous)
- Identification + relocation to appropriate desert / sabkha habitat away from residential areas
- Exclusion — sealing entry gaps, removing harborage (woodpiles, dense ground vegetation, water features)
- Prey-base reduction — reducing the rodents and insects reptiles came in to eat
When to call urgently
Venomous snake sighted, large monitor lizard inside the home, or any reptile cornered around children or pets — call us immediately, keep distance, do not corner the animal further.
How to identify
- House gecko: 8-12cm, pale, translucent, vertical pupils, vocal at night
- Garden agama: 15-25cm, grey-brown, often basking on walls
- Sand snake: slender, sandy beige, fast-moving, harmless
- Saw-scaled viper: 40-80cm, sandy with serrated scales, triangular head — VENOMOUS
Signs of infestation
- Gecko sightings on walls or ceilings (usually at night)
- Shed skin in dusty corners
- Droppings (small dark capsules with white tip)
- Snake tracks in dust or sand near villa exterior
Where they hide
- Garden walls, fence lines, irrigation chambers
- Garage corners, storage rooms
- Under outdoor AC units, near water features
- Wood piles, dense shrubbery, palm tree bases
Health risks
- Geckos and most lizards: no health risk
- Venomous snake bite: medical emergency
- Salmonella from reptile droppings (low risk with normal hygiene)

- Seal gaps around plumbing, AC penetrations and door sweeps
- Trim ground vegetation 30cm clear of villa walls
- Remove wood piles and clutter from garden perimeter
- Address rodent and insect problems — those are the prey base

Lifecycle in UAE conditions
- 1House gecko females lay 1-2 eggs per clutch, several clutches per year, glued to surfaces in protected areas.
- 2Eggs hatch in 6-12 weeks; juveniles look like miniature adults and start hunting insects immediately.
- 3Most UAE lizard species mature in 1-2 years; native monitor lizards take 3-5 years.
- 4Native sand snakes lay 4-12 eggs in sand burrows; saw-scaled vipers are live-bearing with 5-15 young.
- 5Cooler months (December-February) reduce activity but reptiles remain active year-round in heated indoor environments.
Before we arrive
- Photograph or video the reptile if safe to do so — species ID drives our approach
- Stay 5+ metres from any suspected venomous snake — saw-scaled vipers strike defensively
- Don't try to corner or capture the animal yourself
- Keep pets indoors and away from the area
- Note any nearby harborage — wood piles, dense ground vegetation, water features, irrigation chambers
After treatment
- Maintain the gap-sealing exclusion work (door sweeps, mesh on vents) — most reptiles enter via predictable gaps
- Address underlying prey base — rodent and insect issues — to reduce attraction
- Trim ground vegetation 30cm clear of villa walls
- Remove wood piles and clutter from garden perimeter
- Call us if you see fresh shed skin, droppings or new sightings — repeat visits can indicate established harborage we missed
When DIY isn't enough
Always for venomous snakes (saw-scaled viper, horned viper) — DIY attempts have caused fatal envenomations in the UAE. Always for monitor lizards inside the property — they're protected species and need trained handlers. Always for any cornered or aggressive reptile near children or pets. Geckos and small lizards in the garden are generally fine and don't need intervention; we exclude rather than kill.
UAE regulatory context
Native reptiles are protected under UAE wildlife regulations — killing native snakes or monitor lizards is generally prohibited. We operate under live-relocation protocols and partner with the relevant emirate authorities for venomous species. Geckos are explicitly protected and we do not exterminate them.
