House Geckos in Your Home? They're Following the Bugs

Geckos on your wall are a symptom, not the problem. Here's how UAE homes actually clear them by cutting the insect food supply and sealing 5mm gaps.

Geckos aren't really your problem. They're a receipt.

A house gecko on your living-room wall at 9pm is telling you something specific: there's enough insect traffic in that room to feed a small predator every single night. The lizard is the symptom. The flies drawn to your balcony light, the midges off the AC drain, the ants trailing the kitchen skirting, the moths around the bulb in the stairwell, those are the cause. Kill the gecko's food and the gecko leaves, because nothing stays where it can't eat.

That's the part most of the lizard-repellent advice online gets backwards. Onion peels, coffee grounds, garlic spray, the famous egg shells on the windowsill, none of it addresses why the animal is in your home in the first place.

Which gecko you actually have

Nearly every gecko people find indoors in the UAE is the Asian house gecko, Hemidactylus. Pale grey to translucent pink, four to twelve centimetres, soft chirp at night, and toe pads that grip glass and painted walls. It is not venomous, it does not bite people in any meaningful way, and it will not damage the structure of your home. It is, biologically, on your side. One gecko eats hundreds of insects a month.

So why get rid of them? Because most clients don't want droppings on the wall behind the curtain, don't want one darting across the bathroom mirror at midnight, and parents of small kids don't love the tail-drop surprise. Fair enough. But the control method has to match the biology, and the biology says: this is a food-chain issue.

Why your villa or apartment is attractive

Three things pull geckos indoors in this climate.

First, light. Exterior and balcony lights are insect magnets after dark, and a gecko learns within days that the wall beside a porch light is a buffet. Walk around any villa in Jumeirah at night and the geckos are clustered exactly where the lamps are.

Second, water and humidity. Bathrooms, kitchen sinks, the gap behind a washing machine, AC condensate trays, these give both the insects and the lizards the moisture they need through a 45°C summer.

Third, gaps. A gecko flattens through an opening of about 3 to 5 millimetres. That's the standard clearance under an old villa door, the unsealed cable entry where the AC line goes through the wall, the torn corner of a window screen, the weep holes in a façade.

The control that actually works

We treat geckos as an integrated pest management job, not a one-product spray, because there's no registered "lizard killer" worth using in a home and the glue-board approach is both inhumane and useless at scale (more on that below).

Step one is the food base. A technician inspects for the prey: where are the flies breeding, is there an AC drain feeding mosquitoes, are ants trailing, are pantry or clothes moths active. We knock down the insect population with Dubai Municipality-approved residual products placed at harbourage, not blasted across open surfaces. Drop the insect count and the gecko's reason to stay collapses within one to two weeks.

Step two is exclusion. This is the permanent part. Door sweeps and brush seals on the 5mm gaps. Silicone or expanding sealant around AC penetrations, plumbing chases and cable entries. Fine stainless mesh on weep holes and vents. Intact 1.2mm fly screens on every openable window. Done properly, exclusion is what stops the next gecko, and the one after that.

Step three is light discipline. Switch exterior bulbs to warm-toned LED (insects are far less drawn to longer wavelengths than to the old cool-white and UV-leaking lamps). Move the light source away from the door it's lighting where you can, so the bugs gather somewhere other than your threshold.

The honest version of gecko control: we spend about 70% of the job on insects and gaps, and almost none of it on the lizard itself. That's the bit competitors skip, which is why their clients see geckos back the next month.

Why we won't hand you a glue board

Glue boards catch geckos. They also catch the gecko slowly, over hours, and the animal usually dies of stress, dehydration or self-inflicted injury trying to pull free. Beyond the cruelty, it's pointless: a sticky trap removes one individual while doing nothing about the insect supply that drew it in, so the wall is repopulated within days. We don't use them for vertebrates, and a reputable, DM-licensed operator shouldn't either. If you've trapped one live and want it gone, a cup-and-card catch-and-release to the garden is the decent option.

What it costs and how long it takes

Because this is really an insect-and-exclusion job, pricing tracks our standard residential work rather than a special "lizard" rate. A typical one-off integrated treatment for a 2-bedroom apartment runs about AED 250 to 450, a villa AED 400 to 800 depending on size and how much sealing is needed. Exclusion materials and labour are the variable. Most homes see the gecko count drop sharply within two weeks of the insect knockdown, and stay clear once the gaps are closed. We usually recommend a follow-up at three to four weeks to confirm the prey base hasn't rebuilt.

Seasonally, expect more gecko activity from late spring through summer, when insect breeding peaks and everything, lizards included, crowds toward your cooled, lit interior.

A quick reality check before you call anyone

Run this list first. It solves a surprising number of cases on its own:

  • Turn off or relocate balcony and porch lights for a week and watch whether the geckos thin out.
  • Fix every dripping tap, clear the AC drain, empty plant saucers, dry the area behind the washing machine.
  • Run a torch along door bottoms and AC wall penetrations at night, if you see light or daylight, a gecko fits.
  • Check window screens for tears and the mesh-to-frame seal.
  • Wipe down trails and crumbs in the kitchen; ants and stored-product insects feed the whole chain.

If the geckos persist after that, the insect source is somewhere you can't see, and that's the point where an inspection earns its fee.

FAQ

Are house geckos dangerous or poisonous in the UAE? No. The Asian house gecko isn't venomous, doesn't carry a meaningful bite risk for people, and won't damage your home. The main concerns are droppings and the general unease of sharing a wall with one. They can carry Salmonella on droppings, as many animals can, so wash hands after cleaning and keep droppings off food-prep surfaces.

If geckos eat mosquitoes and flies, shouldn't I keep them? Biologically there's a case for it, one gecko is a free, all-night insect trap. If they don't bother you, leaving them be is a perfectly valid choice. Most people call us because of the droppings or because a child or guest is upset by them, not because the gecko is causing harm.

Will a single spray treatment get rid of them? No, and be wary of anyone who promises that. There's no home-safe product that "kills lizards" on contact in a way that clears an infestation. What clears them is removing the insect food and sealing entry points. Spray alone, at best, knocks down the prey for a fortnight before the geckos return.

Do ultrasonic plug-in repellers work on geckos? There's no reliable evidence they do. Geckos habituate quickly, and the devices do nothing about the insects drawing them in. Save the money for door seals and screen repair, which actually change the outcome.

Dealing with geckos that won't quit, or the bugs feeding them? Book an inspection and we'll trace the food chain back to its source rather than chase the lizard around your wall.
