House flies, drain flies and fruit flies need source-based treatment — fly traps catch some, but the breeding source (drains, garbage, organic residue) is the real fix.
The flies UAE buildings actually deal with
- House fly (Musca domestica) — 6-7mm, grey, lands on food. Breeds in garbage, animal waste, decomposing organic matter.
- Drain fly / moth fly (Psychodidae) — 2-4mm, fuzzy, hovers near sinks and floor drains. Breeds in the organic film inside drain traps.
- Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) — 2-3mm, red eyes, attracted to overripe fruit and fermented liquid.
- Phorid fly (Phoridae) — small, runs in jerky pattern. Breeds in drain biofilm or decaying organic matter under floor tiles.
Why the trap on your kitchen window doesn't work
A fly trap catches adults that find it. It does nothing to the maggots developing in your kitchen drain biofilm. Within 7-10 days, fresh adults emerge to replace the ones you caught.
Real fly control is source-based:
- Inspection — locate the breeding source (almost always one specific drain, bin liner gap, or organic-residue area)

How to identify
- House fly: 6-7mm, grey thorax with black stripes
- Drain fly: 2-4mm, fuzzy moth-like wings, dark grey
- Fruit fly: 2-3mm, tan body with red eyes
- Phorid fly: 1-2mm, hump-backed, runs before flying

Lifecycle in UAE conditions
- 1House fly females lay 100-150 eggs per batch on decomposing organic matter; up to 5-6 batches per lifetime.
- 2Egg-to-adult is 7-10 days at UAE summer temperatures — exceptionally fast.
- 3Drain fly females lay 30-100 eggs in the organic film inside drain traps; eggs hatch in 32-48 hours.
- 4Drain fly larvae feed on the biofilm itself for 10-15 days before pupating in the drain; adults emerge into your kitchen.
- 5Fruit flies have the fastest cycle of all — 8-10 days egg-to-adult on overripe fruit or fermenting liquid.
Before we arrive
- Tape clear plastic over each suspected drain overnight — flies emerging will be trapped against it, identifying the source drain
- Don't pour bleach down the drains right before our visit — it disrupts our drain inspection
- Empty the bin and rinse the kitchen pedal-bin cavity
- Move any overripe fruit out of the kitchen for 24 hours
- Note if activity is concentrated by a specific drain, sink or window
After treatment
- Run hot water down rarely-used drains weekly to prevent biofilm rebuild
- Don't pour bleach into drains — bleach kills adults but doesn't break down the biofilm where larvae develop
- Empty kitchen bins nightly and rinse before liner change
- Inspect dishwasher gasket seal monthly — phorid flies often breed in dishwasher residue
- Keep fruit refrigerated or covered during fly active months (April-October)
When DIY isn't enough
DIY for flies usually fails because consumer products don't address the breeding source — drain biofilm, specifically. Chemical drain cleaners kill adult larvae temporarily; within 7-10 days new adults emerge from the surviving biofilm. Bio-enzymatic foam digests the actual biofilm matrix and prevents rebuild. For restaurant-grade or commercial fly issues, monthly enzymatic maintenance is the only sustained fix.
