Cockroaches

Blattodea

German cockroaches in UAE kitchens spread fast in connected buildings and require gel-bait treatment, not just spraying. American cockroaches in drains need targeted residual work.

The two cockroaches that matter in UAE

In UAE homes you usually meet one of two species:

  • German cockroach (Blattella germanica) — small (12-15mm), light brown, two dark stripes on the pronotum. Lives indoors in kitchens and bathrooms. Spreads building-wide through plumbing risers and shared service voids. The single biggest pest call we get in Dubai apartments.
  • American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) — large (35-40mm), reddish-brown. Lives in drains, basements, garbage rooms and irrigation chambers. Comes up through drains at night.

Why spraying alone doesn't work

German cockroach populations live in cracks and voids — behind the fridge, inside the dishwasher motor cavity, under sink edges, in hinge channels. Surface spray hits maybe 10% of the population. The rest survive, mate, and you're back where you started in two weeks.

The modern treatment is gel-bait placed precisely in voids and harborage points. Workers feed on the bait, return to the harborage, defecate and die — and the rest of the colony eats the corpses, transferring the active ingredient through the population. One properly placed gel treatment beats three spray treatments.

Building-wide treatment

If you live in a Dubai or Sharjah apartment with a German cockroach problem, your neighbours probably have one too. We coordinate with building management for risers, garbage chutes and service voids — otherwise treating one flat just relocates the problem.

How to identify

  • German: 12-15mm, light brown, two dark stripes on the pronotum
  • American: 35-40mm, reddish-brown, prefers warm damp areas
  • Egg cases (oothecae) — small dark brown capsules glued in cracks
  • Droppings: pepper-grain-sized for German, larger pellet for American

Signs of infestation

  • Live roaches when you turn on the kitchen light at night
  • Dark smear marks along edges (fecal trails)
  • Musty / oily smell from cabinets
  • Egg cases in hinges, under sinks, behind appliances
  • Shed exoskeletons in cabinet corners

Where they hide

  • Behind and under fridges, ovens and dishwashers
  • Inside cabinet hinges and under shelf edges
  • Around plumbing penetrations under sinks
  • In wall cavities adjacent to shared kitchen plumbing
  • Drains, water meter pits, garbage rooms (American)

Health risks

  • Asthma triggers — cockroach allergens are a major paediatric asthma cause
  • Salmonella, E. coli and Staphylococcus contamination on food surfaces
  • Severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals

Prevention tips

  • Empty kitchen bins nightly; rinse before liner change
  • Seal cracks behind cabinets and around plumbing penetrations
  • Don't leave water in the sink overnight — they need water more than food
  • Inspect grocery deliveries (cardboard is a top entry vector)

Our treatment methods

  • Gel-bait (primary for German cockroaches)
  • Crack-and-crevice residual application
  • Insect growth regulator (IGR) for population suppression
  • Drain dosing (American cockroaches)

Lifecycle in UAE conditions

  1. 1German cockroach females carry an egg case (ootheca) for 28 days — each ootheca holds 30-48 eggs.
  2. 2Nymphs hatch and develop through 6-7 instars over 6-12 weeks before becoming adults.
  3. 3Adults live 6-9 months and produce 4-8 oothecae each, meaning one female can found a colony of 30,000+ in one year.
  4. 4American cockroach development is slower — 6-12 months to maturity — but adults live 1-2 years.
  5. 5Both species reproduce year-round indoors in UAE air-conditioned environments; outdoor populations peak April-October.

Before we arrive

  • Clear kitchen counters and inside cabinets so we can access hinge channels and corners
  • Empty and rinse the bin; expose cabinet undersides
  • Don't pre-spray with hardware-store products — they push roaches into deeper voids and reduce gel-bait acceptance
  • Move pet food bowls and dishes off the floor for the visit
  • Note the rooms where you've seen the most activity

After treatment

  • Don't wipe inside cabinet corners or behind the fridge for 30 days — that's where the bait is working
  • Expect to see MORE activity in the first 24-48 hours as roaches feed on the bait
  • Vacuum any dead roaches you find rather than spraying — disturbing the bait reduces effectiveness
  • Don't use surface insecticide spray near treated areas; it repels roaches away from the bait
  • Call us if you still see live activity 14+ days after treatment — a follow-up is included in the warranty

When DIY isn't enough

If you've seen a live roach in daylight, or more than 2-3 at night with the kitchen lights on, the population is large enough that DIY won't clear it. German cockroach harborages live deep in cracks and voids — over-the-counter sprays kill maybe 10% of the population while pushing the rest into wall cavities and neighbouring flats. Building-wide problems in connected risers always need professional coordination.

UAE regulatory context

Dubai Municipality classifies German cockroaches as a public-health pest because of asthma-trigger allergens and bacterial contamination. Restaurants, hotels and food businesses are required to maintain a documented pest control programme; live cockroach sightings during a routine municipal inspection can result in immediate closure orders.

Frequently asked

For a typical apartment infestation, expect significant reduction within 7-10 days and full elimination in 4-6 weeks. The gel-bait works on a 'feed and return' cycle that takes 2-3 generations to break the population.
Three usual reasons: (1) building-wide problem and they re-invade from neighbouring units, (2) residual ootheca cases hatched after treatment (we plan a 14-day follow-up to catch this), or (3) treatment was spray-only on a German population, which doesn't reach the harborage.
Yes — gel is placed in cabinet corners, behind appliances and inside hinges, out of reach. The active dose is tiny per bait dot, and modern actives (fipronil, indoxacarb) have low mammalian toxicity at those doses.
Cleanliness reduces but doesn't eliminate cockroach pressure. They enter via grocery cardboard, plumbing risers shared with neighbours, and tiny cracks around AC penetrations. In a connected UAE apartment building, your cleanliness controls activity in your unit but not entry from neighbours.
Consumer gels can work for a few visible roaches. They typically fail at scale because (a) placement matters more than product (you need to hit the harborage, not the surface), (b) the active concentration is weaker, and (c) you can't rotate gels every few visits to prevent bait aversion. For an established infestation, professional placement plus rotation is what actually clears the population.
