Dust Mites
Dermatophagoides
Microscopic dust mites trigger allergies and asthma in UAE bedrooms. Treatment combines mattress encasements, hot-wash routines, HEPA vacuuming and humidity reduction — chemicals are usually unnecessary.
What dust mites are
Dust mites (Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus) are microscopic arachnids living in mattresses, pillows, upholstered furniture and carpets. You will never see them — they're 0.2-0.3mm. But their feces and shed exoskeletons are one of the most common indoor allergens worldwide, and a major paediatric asthma trigger.
The UAE dust mite picture
UAE air conditioning paradoxically suits dust mites perfectly: stable temperature 20-26°C, high humidity in bedrooms during summer evenings (when AC condenses moisture into bedding fabric), and abundant skin flake food source. Houses with thick carpeting, fabric headboards, heavy curtains and decorative throw pillows have higher mite populations.
Treatment is rarely chemical
Fumigating for dust mites is mostly pointless — they live deep in fibres and chemicals don't penetrate. The real protocol is environmental:
- Mattress and pillow encasements — zippered allergen-blocking covers
- Hot-wash bedding weekly — 60°C+ kills mites; cooler washes don't
- HEPA vacuum — including mattress, sofa, headboard
- Humidity reduction — keep bedroom RH below 50%
- Reduce fabric clutter — fewer throw pillows, washable curtains
For severe asthma cases we recommend a HEPA air purifier in the bedroom plus quarterly professional steam-clean of mattresses and upholstery.
How to identify
- Microscopic — 0.2-0.3mm, never seen with naked eye
- Diagnosed by allergy testing or environmental sampling
- Confirmed presence in any used mattress or upholstered furniture
Signs of infestation
- Morning sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes
- Asthma flare-ups (especially at night and on waking)
- Worsening symptoms when bed is changed or vacuumed
- Eczema flares in children
Where they hide
- Mattresses (highest density)
- Pillows
- Upholstered headboards and sofas
- Carpets, especially under-bed
- Stuffed toys
Health risks
- Allergic rhinitis
- Asthma triggers
- Eczema worsening (especially paediatric)
- Sleep disruption from chronic congestion
Prevention tips
- Hot-wash bedding (60°C+) weekly
- Use zippered mattress and pillow encasements
- Vacuum with HEPA filter twice weekly
- Keep bedroom RH below 50% (dehumidifier in summer)
Our treatment methods
- Mattress and upholstery steam-clean
- HEPA vacuum extraction
- Encasement recommendation
- Environmental (humidity) consultation
- Targeted acaricide (severe cases only)
Lifecycle in UAE conditions
- 1Dust mite females lay 60-100 eggs over 5-8 weeks of adult life.
- 2Eggs hatch in 6-12 days; larvae develop through protonymph and tritonymph stages over 3-4 weeks.
- 3Adults live 5-8 weeks and feed on shed human skin flakes — a single adult can produce 200x its body weight in fecal pellets in a lifetime.
- 4Reproduction is humidity-dependent: optimal at 70-80% RH, severely reduced below 50% RH.
- 5Populations are highest in mattresses, pillows and upholstered surfaces; bedrooms typically harbour 100,000-10 million mites.
Before we arrive
- Strip bedding and hot-wash (60°C+) before our visit
- Remove decorative throw pillows, stuffed toys and unnecessary fabric items from the bedroom
- Vacuum mattress, pillows, sofa, headboard with HEPA filter (sealed bag, discarded outside)
- Note any allergy or asthma triggers — we'll prioritise the highest-density rooms
- Run AC at 22-24°C with humidity setting if available — drier air slows mite reproduction immediately
After treatment
- Hot-wash bedding (60°C+) weekly going forward
- Use zippered allergen-blocking mattress and pillow encasements — these trap any survivors
- Vacuum twice weekly with HEPA filter; the bag must be sealed and discarded
- Keep bedroom relative humidity below 50% (dehumidifier in summer)
- Reduce fabric clutter — fewer throw pillows, washable curtains, no stuffed toys in bed
When DIY isn't enough
Dust mite chemical treatment is rarely the right call. Most allergists and pest professionals agree the right protocol is environmental — encasements, hot-wash, HEPA vacuum, humidity reduction. We offer steam-clean of mattresses and upholstery for severe cases (chronic asthma, eczema), but the underlying solution is environmental management you can do yourself. Call us for assessment, steam-clean and to rule out other allergens (mould, cockroach, pet dander).
UAE regulatory context
Dust mites are a major paediatric asthma trigger in the UAE; the Emirates Allergy and Immunology Society publishes management guidelines. Schools and nurseries in healthcare-adjacent zones are increasingly adopting allergen-reduction protocols in classroom carpeting and soft-furnishing specifications.
